As of May 1st we jump into patio season once again! Cue the outdoor meals with friends, the early morning breakfast by the water, the catch a cone after a paddle, the bringing out-of-town friends down to the waterfront, the enjoyment of Millennium park festivals and events. We have our fantastic seasoned staff returning and a few new staff ready to compliment the team; classic menu and new menu offerings; expected and returning festivals and new community events and ideas.
This is a big year for us in celebrating where we come starting in 2003. The original owner, and good friend, Andrea Vanderherberg saw something in this little boathouse by the water and built a positive reputation and community heartbeat out of a little cafe with its fresh food and drink. Big kudos to Andrea and Michael for the quality, community-minded foundation they laid.
Now looking ahead to fresh opportunities of 2023. Location #2 at the newly built Canadian Canoe Museum will be launched this fall! Expect a similar Bean vibe with some new and location specific food and drink offerings. Again, we will be situated in a park, on the main path, by beautiful waterfront, in the middle of community life: all fantastic ingredients.
As we celebrate where we come from and look ahead to new chapters, we have you to thank. Through all of the seasons, your presence, support and patronage have made us possible. Together we are better. Cheers to 20!
PETERBOROUGH, Thursday, October 6, 2022 – Drinks, light lunches, tasty treats, and grab-and-go options will all be available at The Canadian Canoe Museum’s (CCM) new café and patio beginning next summer, thanks to a new partnership with the Silver Bean Café. Named the Silver Bean Caféon the Lake, the café will offer tourists, surrounding neighbours, and the general public delectable delights year-round.
In March, the CCM invited proposals from qualified vendors for the supply of café services through a request for proposal process.
“We were searching for an energetic, warm, and welcoming team with proven experience to manage and operate the Museum’s new café, that was also community-minded and would work with us to enhance our visitor experience,” shares executive director Carolyn Hyslop. “The Silver Bean Café was a natural fit! We cannot wait to sip on an Americano by the outdoor fireplace on the lakefront terrace or enjoy an ice cream while walking along the trail and shoreline!”
Dan Brandsma, the owner of The Silver Bean Café, assures his loyal customers that the original location on King Street will continue to operate seasonally but is excited about this new venture.
“We are thrilled that the Silver Bean Café is partnering with the CCM to provide a beautiful new and welcoming café space! It is exciting to be able to provide a location that will be open all year round and maintain a presence on another beautiful Nogojiwanong/Peterborough waterfront with stunning indoor and patio options. We feel we have a natural affinity to the Museum’s values, culture, and waterfront location and will do our utmost to add to the experience with fresh, local and delicious food and drink offerings. What a privilege. We can’t wait!” exclaims Brandsma.
The menu will consist of light lunches with specialty sandwiches and salads; breakfast made fresh to order, including freshly baked scones; desserts baked in-house and imported from other local bakeries; locally roasted coffee and beautifully prepared espresso drinks; Kawartha Dairy ice cream in the summer; soup, chili and other comfort foods in the winter; and a variety of grab-and-go options. The café will also be licensed to serve alcohol.
The café can accommodate 30 people seated inside and 32 seated outside on the terrace. It is expected that the café will be open seven days a week during the Museum’s hours of operation, year-round.
The new museum, which is set to open next summer, will welcome local, national, and international visitors to the region to experience the CCM’s world-class collection and a new suite of exhibits and award-winning programming. Surrounded by public parks on a five-acre site at 2077 Ashburnham Drive in Peterborough, ON, the new museum will provide stunning west-facing views of Little Lake and a connection to the Trans Canada Trail. It will become a vibrant community space for outdoor activities and the Museum’s canoeing and outdoor programs and events. Learn more at canoemuseum.ca/new-museum.
Supporting the new museum project are The Weston Family Foundation, the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, the City of Peterborough, and the County of Peterborough.
It is true. Patio season is just around the corner! We look forward to enjoying our little corner of paradise with the Peterborough / Nogojiwanong community and welcomed visitors to this beautiful area. Mark your calendar for May 1st!
A majority of our fantastic team is returning; and we welcome our new manager, Jade Wallace (who used to manager The Planet North at Trent University). We are most grateful for the dedicated work and the positive impression our former manager Maggie Piper has had at the Bean. We wish her well in her new career path.
The new season greets us with fresh opportunity and challenges. We hope you enjoy the updated seating options in the event room and the addition of some new menu items. We also wanted to be upfront with the current reality of rising food, coffee and ice cream costs, we’ve had to bump up many of our prices. We strive to be affordable yet sustainable as a business. And we thank you for your support.
As our 18th season comes to a close on our last day Oct 17th, we are most grateful for the amazing community support once again. Outdoor dining was thriving this summer. The Staff Bean Team was hard-working, creative and consistent. And the waterfront was a daily treat for us all. Cheers to You!
As of Friday, June 11th, our patio will be open once again! And in keeping with provincial public health guidelines, please maintain up to 4 per table with exceptions for household members. Allow us to clean each table after each use (help us out by flipping the table marker!). And please continue to show the love to our incredible staff!!
Despite all of the Covid challenges, this season has been another amazing experience, thanks to the support of the Peterborough community. Thanks for learning with us and being flexible and patient as we focused on a safe experience for all.
October is our final lap for any given year. This time round, we would like to stay open this month as long as decent weather permits. We have heard how outdoor dining is all the more valuable in these trying times. So come on out, including Thanksgiving Monday, and into late October! Join us for beautiful fall days (with heaters available in the back room) at your cottage in the city.
Amidst cooler weather, school plans, and Covid-19 vigilance, we want to let you know your cottage in the city is still open. We are aiming to stay open into late October, barring nasty weather. Bundle up for a less busy patio, or take refuge in our back room where we aim to facilitate a cozy workspace (wifi and power and hot chocolate available!).
We will be Open on Labour Day and Thanksgiving.
Fall Hours: Sept 1-13: 8:30 AM to 7 PM daily; Sept 14-30:8:30 AM to 6 PM daily; Oct: 8:30 AM to 5 PM daily.
This has been a summer of updates, alterations and accommodations. Thanks for your flexibility and patience, Ptbo!
Heading in August, here’s what’s new:
We have tables available but not upon reservation, but first come, first serve. There are many options to sit within beautiful Millennium Park as well. Please continue to maintain physical distancing when necessary.
There are no boat rentals this year as Pedal & Paddle have decided to close that chapter of their book. Lloyd and Mo will be missed!
As of Aug 1st, to make an order, a face mask is required where and if possible as mandated by Ptbo Public Health. If this is a challenge, staff can accomodate by meeting you at the door to order. We will also sell masks for a donation towards the New Canadian Centre. No mask is required while seated on the patio.
We will be closed on the Civic Holiday, Aug 3rd for a Staff Day away. Our incredible staff require a decent and fun day of rest. 🙂
